The Evolution of Technology in the Workplace

In the world that we live in today technology plays a role in every single facet of the business world. One form of technology that is essential for a firm to be able to run efficiently is management information systems, commonly known as MIS. MIS is defined as “a computer-based coherent arrangement of information aiding the management function” (, 2014). This system helps evolving companies by organizing, assessing and managing their information. Without MIS it would be impossible for businesses to function as efficiently as possible. Key examples of common forms of MIS that are used by evolving companies are the application of new computer softwares and languages, executive support systems and artificial intelligence. Personally I think that the new development of MIS and computer science will only further revolution business as a whole by providing the tools companies need to reach their maximum potential.

The most common form of MIS that can be found is computer softwares and languages. As we can see in today’s world, virtually every single company uses computer software. Programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel provide growing companies with the materials needed to function at a high level, like distribute their information. In the future when these programs develop even more, companies will be more properly equipped to carry out tasks.

Another essential form of MIS is executive support systems. “Executive support systems are intended to be used by the senior managers directly to provide support to non-programmed decisions in strategic management” (, 2014). They are essential in the decision making process for executives at a firm. Areas such as “market intelligence, investment intelligence and technology intelligence” (, 2014) are examples of essential departments within a firm that are handled better because of MIS.

One of the most important types of MIS is artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is the idea that computers have the ability to basically function on their own. For example artificial intelligence lets “machines have the ability to store huge amount of the data and after this step these machines process it into the information at a very high speed” (, 2014). As a result, artificial intelligence lets companies become more efficient by letting technology do a portion of the work. Advantages that stem from this include “it helps to avoid making the mistakes and also helps in responding very quickly to any type of the problem that may arise” (, 2014). It is important to keep in mind though that the use of artificial technology helps people who use it and in fact “does not take their place” (, 2014).

In conclusion I think the results of the future development of MIS will only make people’s tasks in the business world easier. As we can see right now its impact is remarkable on evolving businesses. As far as its effect on policies in the future, the business world as a whole will have to adjust to incorporate the evolutionary technology in their programs to keep up.
